Author compared the antibacterial activity of Dycal, Nu-Cap, zinc oxide-eugenol and Cavitec with those adding formocresol or camphorated parachlorophenol. Calcium hydroxide materials, zinc oxide-eugenol materials and those adding formocresol or camphorated parachlorophenol were studied with agar diffusion method to determine their antibacterial activity on Streptococus mutans and Actinomyces viscosus frequently observed in deep caries dentin.
The results were as follows;
1. Antibacterial activity of Cavitec+formocresol and zinc oxide-eugenol+formocresol was higher than Cavitec and zinc oxide-eugenol at the freshly mixed materials and one day after setting, but was rapidly reduced.
2. Dycal and Nu-Cap retained persistent antibacterial activity after setting and when camphorated parachlorophenol was added to those, antibacterial activity was similar.
3. Catitec and zinc oxide-eugenol retained pdersistent antibacterial activity.
