都市景觀의 「이미지」提高를 위한 環境設計的 考察 : 慶州市를 硏究事例地域으로 = A Study of Environmental Design for the Improvement of the Townscape Image

Environmental images are the results of a two-way process between an observer and his environment, and for many variables, each observer has different environmental quality. What is more, according to complexity and multiplicity of urban structure, the character of urban images is gradually personalized. Owing to these circumstances, it is impossible to operate the townscape for the satisfaction of everybody.
As a matter of fact, many studies of the operating method for the imageability of townscape have been done by environmental designers. But these studies have not contributed to improve the urgent problem. These issues are not owing to the method itself, but to the application of the method of holistic approach.
In this sense, the method of the improvement of townscape image is to accomplish the visual preference for the attainment of legibility and complexity simultaneously. Therefore the holistic approach is essential to imageability.
In this paper I have set up the environmental design criteria and reviewed them to improve the image of townscape.
