In order to prepare high performance polymeric membrane, under ultraviolet(UV) irradiation, the graft copolymerization of 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate(HEMA) onto crosslinked chitosan(C.Chitosan) membrane was carried out by using benzophenone(BP) as a photosensitizer. The pervaporation separation of water-ethanol solution through these modified membranes was studied.
When three kinds of modified chitosan membranes made in this work were applied to the separation of water from aqueous ethanol solution, poly(HEMA) grafted C.Chitosan(C. Chitosan-g-HEMA) membrane showed the best performance.
C. Chitosan-g-HEMA membrane showed relatively exellent selectivity and pervaporation separation index(PSI) at high ethanol concentration. It was found that the pendant hydroxy groups of grafted poly(HEMA) was significant to the increase of water permselectivity.
The results of our work showed that ultrathin C. Chitosan-g-HEMA membrane could be used as a pervaporation membrane with both high permeation rate and high selectivity.
