한 여학생이 남성복 디자인 전문가로 성장하는 경험에 관한 인물 사례 연구 = Qualitative Case Study on a Female Student’s Experiences of Growing up to be a Professional Menswear Fashion Designer

The purpose of this study is to explore the unique and integrated aspects emerging from the life and experiences of a female student who became a fashion expert in the Korean menswear field. The participant(Seohyun) had many years of experience as a designer in menswear. The researchers tried to investigate what motivated her to have interested in the fashion design field and how she built up her knowledge and professional competence after entering university. We conducted in-depth interview with the participant four times between August and October 2019. For the study, the portraiture method was adopted as a single case study to explore the major aspects revealed in the interview data, and footnote was added to the phrases quote to more vividly deliver the meaning of the experiences and events. Seohyun’s case pervasively revealed several major perspectives such as feeling the sense of freedom and conducting youthful activities just like wearing blue jeans as well as building the courage and confidence on the journey to become a menswear specialty designer. She was impressed, when she read Life magazine during her middle school days and inspired by the competent female instructor who taught fashion illustration to her when she was a sophomore at university. After graduation, Seohyun, as a novice designer, was able to open up her eyes to catch consumers’ needs for unprecedented changes in designing menswear under the supervision of manager B. She kept trying to read the mind of menswear consumers and was able to create ‘simple and honest’ design every season. Seohyun was satisfied with her design products as she felt that her personal lifestyle of improving appearance and inner self together was projected in the male world through her design and realized her vision as a confident fashion designer. Overall, her case provided a comprehensive review on the working experiences in the field of menswear design and presented insights for the fashion design at the end.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 국내 남성복 분야의 패션 전문가로 성장하는 한 여학생의 삶과 경험을 통해 부각되는 디자이너의 고유하고 통합적 측면을 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위해 남성복 디자이너로 다 년간의 경험을 가진 연구참여자(서현) 한 명을 섭외하여 패션디자인 분야로 관심을 가지게 된 동기와 대학 진학 후에 전문적인 지식과 소양을 쌓아가는 일련의 삶의 궤적을 살펴보았다. 서현은 2019년 8월부터 10월 사이에 총 4회에 걸쳐 심층면담에 참여하였다. 연구자는 인물사례 연구방법을 차용하여 면담 전사자료 중에서 드러나는 주요 측면을 시간흐름표로 작성하였으며 생생한 인용구를 포착하여 주석을 달면서 그 속에 담긴 의미를 해석하였다. 자료 해석 결과 청소년기, 대학시기, 패션 디자이너 입문 과정에서 Life 잡지, 30대 여성강사, B부장과의 만남을 통해 패션에 대한 새로운 눈을 뜨고 전문가로 성장하는 주요 측면을 보여주었다. 서현의 삶은 마치 청바지 같은 자유스러움과 발랄한 활동성과 남성복 디자이너의 길을 가는 당당함과 자신감을 지속적으로 보여주었다. 그는 남성복 소비자들의 심리를 파악하면서 ‘간결하고 정직한 디자인’을 매 시즌마다 창출하였다. 서현은 자신의 외모와 내면을 가꾸고자 하는 개인적 삶의 방식이 자신이 디자인한 제품을 통해 남성의 세계에 확산되는 듯한 모종의 희열을 느꼈으며 당당한 패션전문가로서의 비전을 실현하고 있었다. 그리고 남성복 디자인 직무 경험에 대하여 통합적으로 고찰하였으며 마지막에 패션디자인 분야에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.
