<AbsText> THAT fall into the pit of the spirit which the French call le cafard, wherein the world seems for the first time utterly comprehensible in terms of horror and disgust, is an experience common to many writers. The writer of reasonable balance, however, subject to these falls, will in time learn to recognise that his findings while in this abominable condition are not necessarily revelations in the sense of St. John the Divine: in fact, that his vision of life while in the depths is no more objective than his vision while on the heights. </AbsText>
