The chlorination of uranium dioxide to uranium tetrachloride is important for economical preparation of uranium metal.
In this paper, the qualitative and quantitative evaluations of each parameter on the chlorination were performed by the use of the experimental results obtained from different reaction conditions.
The main results on this study were as follows;
In gas-solid reaction without molten salts, the optimum reaction conditions for the chlorination of uranium dioxide were the reaction temperature of 500℃-700℃, the reaction time of 2hrs., the reductant quantity of 140wt%/mol and equivalent ratio of chlorine injection.
In gas-liquid reaction with molten salts, the optimum reaction conditions for the chlorination of uranium dioxide were the reaction temperature of 600℃-700℃, the reaction time of 4hrs. and the reductant quantity of 105wt%/mol.
