The linguistic and cultural varieties of the Spanish language have traditionally dominated the teaching and learning of Spanish as a foreign language (SFL). Due to the influence of the Common European Framework of Reference and the Curriculum Plan of the Instituto Cervantes, it has become imperative for SFL educators to utilize the linguistic diversity of Latin America. In most cases, course textbooks determine the content of education. This study seeks to analyze the linguistic and cultural varieties of Latin America in the four versions of Aula, the SFL textbooks published by Difusión. Aula internacional (2005) dealt with Latin American culture as a separate activity. Aula latina (2005) focused on Mexican culture. Unfortunately, linguistic diversity was not well-documented in either textbook. In contrast, Spanish cultural variety is not only present in the micro-tasks in the lessons but provides the context for communication in Aula internacional N. E. (2013). Produced with the support of the Colombian government, Aula América (2018) includes not only the cultural diversities of Latin America, but also linguistic varieties, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.
