The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristic of practices of Ashtanga Yoga instructors and examine the internal and external effects of practices during the process as well as why they are fascinated by Ashtanga Yoga. By doing so, this study pursued to provide basic data related with Ashtanga Yoga, not only to professional yoga instructors but also to normal yogis and persons engaged in this field, and eventually to offer practical help in the actual field.
For the validity of research methods, the study used purposeful snow-ball sampling method to select yogis with enough Ashtanga Yoga practising experience. And as the subjects for this research, this study selected 10 yogis among Ashtanga Yoga instructors with career of more than five years, yogis who practise everyday - as one of the most important features of Ashtanga Yoga - and Ashtanga Yoga Authorized teachers by KPJAYI R. Sharath Jois in INDIA. To achieve the purpose of the research, it used phenomenological approach, which is one of qualitative research methods, and conducted analysis of literature related with Ashtanga Yoga. Also to observe the lives of everyday practising yogis, the study, directly participating in Ashtanga Yoga workshops, conducted participatory observation. The study carried out in-depth interview as a main source and further collected data through research of yoga-related literature. Using this methodology, the study derived findings as below.
First, characteristics of Ashtanga Yoga practice were categorized into six groups: daily practice, change of diet to vegetarian one, meditation by moving, reflection of daily practice on guidance, practice done together and Mysore magic.
Second, effects of practice ON Ashtanga Yoga instructors were shown as exterior change of the body and its internal change. Owing to the former change, the subjects had consciousness of own body as well as insight perceiving the body change. While, internal change of the body had four subcategories: complete relaxation due to reduced stress, temperamental change, boost of self-confidence, challenging spirit and sense of achievement.
Third, four subcategories emerged as the answer for why Ashtanga Yoga instructors are fascinated by Ashtanga Yoga. Scientific sequence (Ashtanga Yoga system), practice on mat is a microcosm of our lives, healing powers and lastly respect for the instructor.
The following is suggestions for follow-up studies based on above analysis results.
First, research on practising culture among normal yogis will contribute to the popularity of Ashtanga practising system. Second, in regard to characteristics of the group and practising system, comparative analysis with other yoga practising systems is needed. Third, given its nature of practising system, Ashtanga Yoga has a good immersion effect while people practise yoga. So, physiological research methods for change of hormone, physical composition, the state and change of brainwave before and after yoga practice are needed to carry out research on the state when brainwave is down. Lastly, in an attempt to explore the yogi's experience or knowledge of India's practising culture, the research should be extended to study on ethnography regarding the meaning of groups, formation of culture and shared systems.
