Contemporary Vipassanā meditation is mostly performed in the style labeled ‘dry-visioned’ or ‘suddha-vipassanā’. This study compares the two different suddha-vipassanā techniques of Mahasi and Shweoomin in terms of concentration training. Both of these vipassanā meditations were developed in Myanmar in the late 1950s and are commonly taught to cultivate concentration training using the scriptures of Early Buddhism (Pāli-Nikāya). However, they diverged in practice methods. First, Mahasi vipassanā urged practitioners to be patient in the face of difficulty and to practice diligently, while proponents of Shweoomin vipassanā place importance on calming the mind to eliminate tension. Thus, the difference is “effort with strain vs. effort without strain.” Second, in Mahasi vipassanā, sati was practiced through the contemplation of body and contemplation of feeling. Practitioners try to remain aware of their senses, that is, the objects of meditation. In Shweoomin vipassanā, sati is practiced through the contemplation of mind and contemplation of Dhamma. Practitioners keep various perceptions at a distance in their minds to sustain clear awareness. Thus, the techniques differed in that, in the first, sati was applied to senses or objects of the mind by focusing on them, and in the second, they were kept at a distance. Third, Mahasi vipassanā seeks to eradicate the five hindrances by using momentary concentration and developing vipassanā absorption (when needed). Conversely, concentration in Shweoomin vipassanā strays from the original meaning of concentration and, rather, seeks to attain relaxation or a stable state. In addition, the differences between these two methods are clear in terms of the developmental process of practice and goals of meditation. Although both of them share a common name, suddha-vipassanā, they differ in terms of method of practice. Mahasi attempts to retain the Theravāda Buddhist tradition by following the standard of The Path of Purification (Visuddhimagga). By making the most of the traditional processes of division and analysis, Mahasi vipassanā attempts to understand the human body and mind. Shweoomin vipassanā, which developed later than the Mahasi vipassanā, appears to attempt to overcome or eliminate this complexity of Mahasi. However, Shweoomin strays from mainstream traditional vipassanā practice and attempts a renewed interpretation and practice. By comparing these differences, this study is expected to contribute to the objective assessment of various meditation techniques. However, some concerns remain about the possible dilution of traditional practice methods that have been developed based on centuries of practical experiences.
