IN the centre of the town of Bedford there is a noble church. It stands in a capacious square, but between it and the main street there are certain houses which obstruct the view from the streets. The Corporation have long wished to clear away these buildings, but had not the requisite money. His Grace the Duke of Bedford has presented 1,000/. to the Corporation to help to get rid of these obnoxious buildings. Further, His Grace, at a gathering to celebrate the laying of the first stone of a new Corn Exchange, announced that he had ordered for the town a bronze statue of John Bunyan, who, as all the world knows, long preached and was imprisoned in Bedford.
