데카르트의 방법론에서 습관의 지위 = The Status of Habit in Descartes’ Methodology

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 데카르트의 방법론에서 습관이 수행하는 역할을 주시하면서 그 지위를 드러내는 데 목적이 있다. 데카르트는 그의 초기 저서 『정신지도규칙』과 『방법서설』에서 진리를 발견하기 위한 규칙들을 제시한다. 이와 동시에 정신의 능력을 함양하고 증대하기 위해서는 규칙들의 훈련과 연마를 통해 습관을 형성하고, 이를 통해 능숙하게 규칙들을 사용할 수 있어야 한다고 강조한다. 데카르트는『정신지도규칙』에서 지성의 두 활동, 즉 직관과 연역, 그리고 이것들을 수행하는 역량들, 즉 통찰과 명민을 함양하는 수단으로 습관을 제시한다. 나는 데카르트의 이런 습관의 강조가 ‘방법을 완성하는 것으로서 습관’을 의미하는 것으로 이해한다. 습관이 데카르트의 방법론에서뿐만 아니라 그의 형이상학 및 정념이론에서도 중요한 역할을 담당한다는 점에서, 비록 명시적으로 드러나지는 않지만, 그것은, 내가 생각하기에, 데카르트의 철학 전체에서 주요한 지위를 차지한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to reveal the status of habits by observing their role in Descartes' methodology. Descartes presents rules for discovering truth in his early books Regulae ad directione ingenii and Discours de la methode. At the same time, it is emphasized that in order to cultivate and increase mental ability, man must form habits through training and polishing rules, and through this, man must be able to use the rules skillfully. In Regulae Descartes presents habits as a means of cultivating two activities of the intellect, namely ‘intuitio’ and ‘deductio’, and two capacities to perform them, namely ‘perspicacitas’ and ‘sagacitas’. I understand that Descartes' emphasis on this habit means ‘habit as a completion of a method’. In the sense that habit plays an important role not only in Descartes' methodology but also in his metaphysics and theory of passions, it occupies, I think, a major position in Descartes' entire philosophy, even if it is not explicitly shown.
