『시모네』에 나타난 푸에르토리코 현실과 ‘비가시성’의 극복 = Overcoming Puerto Rican ’invisibility’ in Simone of Eduardo Lalo

국문 초록 (Abstract)

『시모네』는 2011년 아르헨티나의 꼬레히도르(Corregidor) 출판사가 만든 ‘카리브 제도(Archipiélago Caribe)’시리즈의 첫 번째 작품으로 출판되었다. 『시모네』가 스페인 대형 출판사들이 주목하지 않는 카리브 문학의 현실, 나아가 푸에르토리코와 푸에르토리코 문학 현실을 상징적으로 잘 드러내고 있기 때문이다. 이런 긍정적인 평가를 통해 에두아르도 랄로(Eduardo Lalo)는 2013년 18회 로물로 가예고스(Rómulo Gallegos) 상을 받았다. 그러나 그가 로물로 가예고스 상 수상자로 발표되었을 때 예상 밖의 선정이라는 평가도 많았다. 라틴아메리카의 독립 출판사에서 작품을 출판한 그다지 널리 알려지지 않은 작가였기 때문이다. 이런 랄로의 수상을 두고 몇 가지 비판적인 목소리들이 제기된 것도 사실이다. 이른바 ‘핑크 타이드’의 정치적 선동의 도구로『시모네』가 선택되었다는 것과, 이 작품의 문제의식이 핑크 타이드의 정치적 지향과 일치하지 않는다는 비판이 대표적이다. 로물로 가예고스 상이 베네수엘라의 정치 상황과 밀접하게 연결되어 있기 때문이다.
『시모네』에 대해서는 로물로 가예고스 상 수상에서 보는 것처럼 푸에르토리코의 비가시성(invisibility)을 드러내는 의미 있는 작품으로 평가하는 태도와, 반대로 신자유주의에 대한 비판적인 태도에도 불구하고 지식인을 강조하는 일종의 아리엘주의(arielismo)에 갇혀 있다는 비판이 공존하고 있다. 이런 긍정적인 태도와 비판적인 입장의 공존에 주목하면서, 푸에르토리코의 비가시성을 드러내고 극복하려는 에두아르도랄로의 의지가 『시모네』에서 어떻게 드러나고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Eduardo Lalo’s Simone was published in 2011 as the first work of the ‘Archipiélago Caribe’ series by the Argentinian publishing house, Editorial Corregidor. Simone reveals the reality of Caribbean literature which is often neglected by more well-known publishers of the Spanish-speaking world, and furthermore expounds the world of Puerto Rican literature. Based on the critical acclaim of the book, Lalo received the 18th Rómulo Gallegos prize in 2013. However, his winning was also met with surprise since he was a relatively unknown author whose work was published by an independent publishing house in Latin America. Ordinarily, there were voices of disapproval within the literature community. The main criticism was that Simone was chosen as a political instigation of the Pink Tide movement and that the consciousness of the work was actually not consistent with the political orientation of the Pink Tide. It was considered that the political situation of Venezuela had influenced the decision of the Rómulo Gallegos prize.
There are polarized opinions of Simone : one is that it brings attention to the invisibility of Puerto Rico as acknowledged by the Rómulo Gallegos prize, and the other is that, despite its critical attitude towards neoliberalism, it is trapped in the arielismo of emphasizing intellects and elitism. This article focuses on both the positive and critical reading of Simone and aims to examine how Eduardo Lalo’s intent of revealing and overcoming the invisibility of Puerto Rico manifested in Simone.
