The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the logical background of the thought formation process.
Rousseau proposed a new education centered on the child in his 「Emile」, based on the 18C enlightened movement. His ideological background can be divided into four periods dependence, preparation, trial and of arrangment, and retirement-according to their influence on his ideological foundation. The features of each period can be presented as follows :
Period of Dependence(1712~1737) : the formation of a natural and romantic character in his childhood, stemming from the splendid landscape of the beautiful valley of savoy of Bosey, an important influence on his political, religious and educational philosophies.
The Golden Period(1749~1761) : He won the prize at the Academy of Dijon with the paper titled "Has the restoration of the sciences & arts tended to purify morals?" This paper was the basis for a movement which tended to release human reason invigorating religion, politics, and society. The book 「Emile」 pursued the human factor, criticizing the existing level of society and presention guides to build an ideal society. From this book child-centered education started.
Period of Trial(1762~1766) : Rousseau expressed hostile feeling against the existing order and had to fight oppression because of his criticism of society. He decided to flee from his country after hearing that the French government had impouned the already published 「Emile」.
Period of Arrangement and Retirement(1767~1778) : He approached a pure retirement period toward the end of his life after long trials and fights against oppression. He criticized conventional child education which treated a child as a simple, incomplete person. In the light of his life experience and philosophies he emphasized that children have their own areas of competence and that education should be focused according to that area.
