      The purpose of this paper is to promote the understanding of Elliott’s philosophy of music education and the development of philosophical research in music education based on the exploration of Dewey’s philosophical perspectives on the foundational matters proposed in Music Matters second edition. Dewey is a representative Pragmatist philosopher in the United States, whose educational philosophy is characterized by a child-centered educational philosophy, and art as experience is the main focus of the John Dewey theory of art. The foundational matters proposed in Music Matters second edition concern some serious tasks of philosophy and the topics in the relationship between philosophy and music education, music, education, personhood, etc. Dewey’s philosophical views are cited on each subject. Dewey’s work in discussions about these subjects has been cited more frequently than any other philosophers. This is proof that Dewey’s philosophy plays a big part in the foundation of Elliott’s philosophy of music education. Therefore, in order to understand Elliott’s philosophy of music education, in-depth research on Dewey’s philosophical views is needed. This study not only promotes the understanding of Elliott’s philosophy of music education, but also presents constructive philosophical measures for the purpose and direction, content and method of current music education.

      The purpose of this paper is to promote the understanding of Elliott’s philosophy of music education and the development of philosophical research in music education based on the exploration of Dewey’s philosophical perspectives on the foundational matters proposed in Music Matters second edition.
