The disaster situation of COVID-19 in March 2020 brought many changes in education. For the first time in the history of public education, the start of school was postponed in March, and schools started online in April. The first remote lessons I encountered caused a lot of confusion and anxiety.
Insufficient number of school days, unstable platforms, and insufficient content eventually led to lower academic achievement. As the anxious mind grew, private education increased, and the phenomenon of academic polarization occurred.
If the purpose of learning and growth is lost, the reason for the existence of the school will disappear. I started this study with the idea of how to overcome this crisis if we go back to March 2020.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to derive improvement measures to improve basic academic ability in the era of COVID-19.
First, we looked into distance learning, basic education, and edutech, and extracted the situation and problems in the education world caused by COVID-19. Two problems were discovered, the lowering of basic academic ability and the educational gap, and we would like to suggest an improvement plan to solve these problems. The results of the study are as follows.
First, it is necessary to build an integrated K-Edu platform and expand AI-based customized learning. This is because, in the beginning, distance learning itself was difficult due to the lack of classroom equipment and equipment. Although there were various platforms such as Zoom and online classes, it was difficult to improve the quality of classes due to instability. Therefore, it is necessary to support the learning system and learning management by opening a platform linked with NEIS as soon as possible.
The expansion of customized learning based on artificial intelligence is more important than anything else. Although the school-age population is declining, private education expenses are on the rise. In times like these, more personalized learning is needed. Rather than a learning method that transfers and injects knowledge through the entire lecture, it is necessary to implement a learning method that allows students to directly experience and create knowledge on their own using artificial
intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR).
Second, individualized education support and support for the underprivileged are essential. This will be able to contribute to the enhancement of accountability and trust in public education by bridging the educational gap and preventing the polarization of educational attainment. For this purpose, blended learning that can freely organize online and offline classes and interactive online instruction for children with learning difficulties should be expanded.
Support for the underprivileged should be continued through support for education expenses and customized support linked to the region. Policies that support the learning expenses of the low-income class and guarantee educational opportunities should continue. In order to close the education gap, a more closely tailored policy should be implemented by developing a program that meets local needs and utilizing local community resources.
