알바 알토(Alvar Aalto) 주택 중정의 역할과 의미에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Roles and Meaning of Courtyards of Alvar Aalto’s Residences

국문 초록 (Abstract)

핀란드 건축가인 알바 알토는 모더니즘 시대의 대표적인 건축가이지만 동시대의 유행한 스타일과 달리 출신 지역인 핀란드의 문화와 전통, 자연을 담는 디자이너로 잘 알려져 있다. 독특한 핀란드 자연환경과 문화로부터 디자인 영감을 받은 알토는 자연과 통합된 생활공간을 추구하였다. 특히 그의 주택에서는 건물만이 아니라 중정이 중심적인 역할을 한다. 본 연구는 알토의 자연관 및 디자인 철학을 검토하고 알토가 디자인한 주택의 중정공간을 분석함으로써 자연과의 통합관점에서의 중정의 의미와 역할을 알아보고자 하였다. 그 결과, 인간, 건물, 정원이라는 삼위일체를 이상적인 삶의 공간이라고 믿었던 알토의 중정은 인간과 자연의 매개 역할을 한다. 또한 그의 중정은 주변경관 및 지형에 조화되고 순응하고, 외부활동에 제한적인 북유럽 지역의 기후에 대응하며 정원을 즐길수 있도록 하는 역할을 한다. 알토의 중정은 그 형태와 재료 사용에 있어서 핀란드의 토속적인 지역색과 어린 시절의 향수가 반영된 상징적인 의미를 함축한 공간이기도 하다. 모더니즘 시대에 건축과 조경의 이분법적인 경계없이 자연과 인간의 통합을 시도한 알토의 디자인 철학과 접근방식은 조경분야에서도 재조명되어야 할 부분일 것으로 판단된다.

Alvar Aalto is a Finnish Modernist architect but he is well known as a designer who embraced Finnish culture, tradition and nature unlike the Modernist styles. Inspired by the unique Finnish natural environment and culture, Aalto pursued the integration of interior with exterior spaces and nature where a courtyard played an important central role. The purpose of this study is to examine the meanings and roles of the courtyard in Aalto’s houses by analyzing the courtyards of his residential houses to understand Aalto’s landscape insights. Literature review and a field study found that Aalto believed that the trinity of man, building, and garden depict an ideal place of life and a courtyard mediates between man and nature. The courtyards play a role in harmonizing and adapting to surrounding landscape and terrain. It also help people enjoy garden and outdoor life responding to the limited Nordic climate. Aalto's courtyards connote Finnish vernacular tradition and childhood nostalgia through the form and use of materials. Aalto's design approach of integrating nature with human beings without dichotomous boundary between architecture and landscape is valuable and worthy to reevaluate through landscape lens.
