Although the concept of naturalness is considered as an aesthetic goal in the fields of HCI and HRI including the entertainment industry, there is no generally agreed definition. For this reason, this article attempted to conceptualize the notion of naturalness by adapting the methodological approach applied to the Turing test that determines the subject between humans or machines. This study investigated cognitive-psychological factors involved in the uncanny valley effect such as expectation, cognitive biases, uncertainty, surprise, and adaptation based on cognitive neuroscience studies since it is the most representative phenomenon of unnaturalness. In this process, this paper reviewed predictive theories such as predictive coding and the cognitive-evolutionary model of surprise. The findings indicate that naturalness can be conceptualized as the state in which an object or event is considered the way it is.
