존 로크와 복종의 영역들:로크의 자유주의에 대한 재해석 = John Locke and the Spheres of Obedience:Reinterpreting Locke’s Liberalism

This essay is reinterpreting Locke’s political thought thoroughly as an attempt to separate the spheres of obedience, that is, family, state, and church. In his Two Treatises of Government and Epistola de Tolerantia Locke is pursuing vigorously to separate the spheres and the obligations appropriate to each sphere: filial duty, political obligation based on subject’s consent, and religious obedience solely to God. These liberal features of Locke’s political thought are best understood in contrast with Filmer’s and his intellectual ancestors’ familial analogies of political power. Separating the different spheres of obedience Locke makes not only politics free from family or religion, but also religion from family or politics. In this sense, Locke’s Liberalism is “the art of separation”.
