<AbsText> IT was Lawrence of Arabia, of course, who was mainly though by no means solely responsible for building up the modern Arab legend. I remember a conversation on this subject in 1937 with the late Major-General Wingate-- he was then, as Captain Wingate, serving as Intelligence Officer in the Middle East. Wingate, incidentally a distant relative of Lawrence, claimed that the latter's revolutionary idea of an outflanking attack from the desert against the Turkish front in Palestine represented the correct strategy for the Allies' 1917-18 Palestine campaign. </AbsText>
