<號外時代> 硏究 = Study on <Ho-oi Si-dae>

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Su-hae Choi(1901-1931) has been regarded as a very important novelist in a viewpoint of to the history of Korean literature on which was investigated actively and remarkably. On the other hand it is strange that one of his works, <Ho-oi Si-dae>(warning for the period of crisis)(Maeilsinbo, 1930. 9.20-1931. 8.1), was not stood out specially. Added were only a few comments that make his fame underestimated.
I would like to approach it and to evaluate how important it has progressed in the modern history of Korean literature. In his accomplishment the writer tired to show the social situation at that time when big capital from Japan invade the small scale of Korean industry. And he wanted to represent the age of crisis that spoil the human spirit because of almighty money principles from the Japanese imperialism. It was the times that the social situation go to chaoes and desperations.
He would like to describe the real society and homology in the story through the characters experience and dates which are written different from each other in the story structure. They were, so to speak, brutal atmosphere, dreary desolation of that society in contrast to the image of winter. He would like to lead Korean to the way of national independence from Japan by leading the night school program to them against Japanese conspiracy to make Korean colonized and ignorant. In his work, <Ho-oi Si-dae>, reflecting Korean real propectives in 1920s, it is one of the typical works in the studies of Korean modern novels, I believe.
