한국인의 문화성향에 관한 메타분석: 집단주의와 개인주의를 중심으로 = A Meta-Analytic Review of Koreans’ Cultural Self-Orientation: Focusing on Collectivism and Individualism

In this paper, we meta-analyzed empirical studies that have examined the cultural self-orientation of Koreans along the dimension of collectivism-individualism. Through this meta-analysis, we investigated whether and to what extent Koreans' cultural self-orientation was collectivistic rather than individualistic. Furthermore, we looked at whether the level of collectivism and individualism in Koreans differed as a function of time of data collection, gender and age of study participants as well as scale reliability and content. A total of 41 studies published in Korean were included in the meta-analysis (N=12,925). The results showed the following: First, the level of collectivism in Koreans was relatively higher than the level of individualism in Koreans, but the difference was small to medium in size. Second, the difference between the level of collectivism and that of individualism became larger with age of study participants. Third, the higher the scale reliability, the smaller the difference between the level of collectivism and that of individualism became. In addition, the effect size for the difference between collectivism and individualism varied as a function of scale content. Fourth, gender of study participants and time of data collection were not significantly associated with Koreans' cultural self-orientation. Finally, publication bias was not detected. The implications and limitations of this meta-analysis were discussed, and directions for future empirical research as well as meta-analysis were suggested.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서는 한국인의 문화성향을 집단주의-개인주의 차원에서 살펴보았던 경험적 연구들을 메타분석 하였다. 이 메타분석을 통해 한국인의 문화성향이 개인주의적이라기보다 집단주의적이라고 할 수 있는지, 만약 그렇다면 개인주의 성향에 비하여 집단주의 성향이 어느 정도 강한지 알아보았다. 더 나아가, 한국인의 집단주의 및 개인주의 수준이 시간의 흐름에 따라, 연구참가자들의 성별 및 연령에 따라, 그리고 측정의 신뢰도와 척도의 내용에 따라 다르게 나타나는지 살펴보았다. 분석에는 총 41개의 국내 연구들(N=12,925)이 포함되었다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 개인주의 성향보다 집단주의 성향이 상대적으로 더 강한 것으로 나타났지만 그 차이는 작은 크기에서 중간 크기 범위에 속하였다. 둘째, 연구참가자들의 연령대가 높을수록 집단주의 성향이 개인주의 성향보다 더 강해지는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 척도의 신뢰도가 높을수록 집단주의 성향과 개인주의 성향 간의 차이는 작아졌으며, 측정에 사용된 척도에 따라 문화성향 간의 차이가 달라졌다. 넷째, 연구참가자들의 성별과 자료 수집 시점은 문화성향의 차이와 관련이 없었다. 마지막으로, 출판 편의의 가능성은 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구가 가지는 의의 및 제한점을 논하고, 한국인의 문화성향에 대한 후속 경험적 연구와 메타분석 연구의 방향에 대해 제언하였다.
