This study was conducted to certify the Self incompatibility and to investigate the Self-incompatible characteristics in Hibiscus syriacus. The effect of Self-and Cross-pllination, floral age, temperature pretreatment, and ovary on pollen tube growth and seed set was investigated.
Respiration process during Self and Cross pollinated pollen tube growth was detected by Warburg manometer. Changes of free amino acids was traced by ionexchange chromatography. The experimental results obtained are summarized as follows.
1. The failure to obtain seed after Self-pollination confirmed the Self-incompatibility of Hibiscus syriacus.
2. The Cross-pollinated pollen tube grew more rapidly than Self-pollinated pollen tube.
3. In bud stage, the pollen tube after Self and Cross pollination grew with same velocity each other.
4. Temperature pretreatment of styles inactivated the Self-incompatibility.
5. The respiration process, changes of free amino acids and hypothesis of Self-incompatibility were discussed.
