Sir,--Amphicon, in his letter, inserted in your paper of 31st ult, addressed to the farmers of the United States on the subject of the tariff, after very ably discussing the matter, comes to this conclusion, that America will become her own manufacturer, and that "Agriculture, the noblest of employments will prosper, &c." I perfectly agree with Amphicon that the former of these speculations is likely to be realised by degrees; but in what way the agricultural interest is to be benefitted by it, is more than I can at present conceive; for should such a course of events take place as he conjectures, it appears clear to me that the effect would be quite the reverse to what he anticipates; the immediate consequence resulting from the loss of such a valuable customer as Great Britain would be, the overstocking the markets with such agricul tural produce as we are in the habit of exporting to that country--the decrease in value of such articles, in consequence, until they would become so low as not to reimburse the grower, which would in a great measure put a stop to their cultivation and leave thousand of acres idle.
