American poetry is unique. Unlike that of any other land or nation, it has had no youth or infancy; it was at its birth old and crippled. It has had no troubadours or minnesingers coming like youthful prophets to foretell its greatness, to sing in quaint old ballads of the stirring deeds which have made New England famous. Our fathers were their own poets, as well as priests.
