The choreopoem is the significant theatrical strategy of Shange that combines poetry, chant, song and dance. It is distinctly African-American heritage and cultural reality which arouses an emotional response in an audience. Shange`s presentation of this form show her artistic and political goal of defining her own identity. One of Shange`s dramaturgy is a rejection of standard English. Language has been used as the most powerful tool to maintain the dominate ideologies. Shange rejects white standard English intentionally. She wanted to attack and maim the language that she was taught to hate herself. She uses black vernacular by creating her own rules of capitalizations, punctuation, word order and syntax. for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf is her representative play. A collection of twenty poems, songs and narratives for colored girls represents a communal act in which seven women, arrayed in all the colors of the rainbow, take up their roles, celebrate their joys and share their losses. Each perfomer is only identified by a color. An interesting fact is that in the rainbow indigo is replaced by brown. The color of brown symbolizes the skin tone of black people and also relates the anguish of colored people. They had to face various violent situations such as a rape, abortion, loneliness, rejection and domestic violence. Rape and abortion are the most painful and traumatic examples of women experiences. Ironically, they are suffering physical and mental pain of the violent situation and the emotional hurt of the victimization they experienced. Even though Shange attacks the violent behavior of some black men, she points out women`s own responsibility for their suffering at the same time. Shange also said that women should have a self-confidence. In no assistance women don`t want to be dependant on men`s assistance or guidance. Shange also defies the notions of sexuality and virginity. In graduation nite, she recognizes that sexual awakening is empowering, and considers sexual experience as a powerful initiatory ritual for the female. Sexuality need not be shameful or hidden, it should be celebrated according to Shange. Other counter-hegemonic ideas of Shange`s play are singing and dancing. Music or singing is considered as a second language of survival for black people. Dancing is one of the cultural realities for balck people. In sechita, black night club dancer sechita is represented by Shange from the changing image of a prostitute to a goddess of creativity. a nite with beau willie brown, is the most controversial story in this play. It deals with wife beater who drops his two children out of the fifth floor window because his girlfriend crystal refuses to marry him. In the end, a laying on the hands, has all characters holding hands and singing together. They are unified by shared experiences and speak of self-love and sisterhood. The symbolic image of unification, the rainbow, which comes after a storm, connotes the possibility of women`s power and discovers the beauty within themselves.
