The purpose of this study was to evaluate a program which helps middle school students minimize state and trait anxiety related to academic and test taking, and improving their internal control ability. This program was a synthesis treatment including Gestalt and cognitive-behavioral therapies. A total of 18 middle school students recruited by a counseling center in Seoul participated in the study, and they were divided into an experimental and control group containing 9 students each. The study duration included 10 program events lasting 100 minutes each, occurring twice per week. The study program included activities and observations that tested anxiety as related to academics. Results after 30 days revealed that test, academic, state and trait anxiety had all decreased. However, an external-control tendency was observed as opposed to an internal-control. Final results demonstrated significantly decreased academic and trait anxiety but there was no remarkable change in either state anxiety or internal control tendencies. In conclusion, the Gestalt-cognitive-behavioral integrated therapy produced desirable effects for the purpose of dispelling state and trait anxiety associated with academics and test taking.
