레이먼드 윌리엄스의 경계 정체성(Border Identity)과 세계문학 = Raymond Williams’ Border Identity and World Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

레이먼드 윌리엄스는 ‘문화 유물론자’로 잘 알려져 있었지만, 그의 웨일즈인으로서의 정체성이 가진 의미는 진지한 비평의 영역에서 간과돼 오곤 하였다. 그러나 그의 글과 사상에서 웨일즈인으로서의 정체성은 매우 중요한 비중으로 차지하며, 이는 언어 및 문화이론뿐 아니라 세계문학에 대한 그의 입장과도 연결된다. 윌리엄스의 정체성에 대해 ‘경계 정체성’(border identity)이라 이름 붙일 수 있는데, 이는 대략 2가지의 경계를 오가는 그의 체험과 의식을 드러낸다. 하나는 웨일즈와 영국의 경계이며, 다른 하나는 그것과 연관된 시골과 도시의 경계이다. 윌리엄스의 경계 정체성은 그의 저작들을 읽을 때 기존의 관점과 달리 통합적 관점을 적용할 필요성을 상기시킨다. 그것은 기존에 강조되어 오던 마르크시즘적 유물론적 사유와 웨일즈인으로서의 그의 의식을 접목해서 살피는 관점일 것이다. 그리고 이러한 통합적 관점을 회복할 때에라야 ‘세계문학’ 에 대한 그의 관심과 견해를 올바로 이해할 수 있을 터이다. 이 논문에서는 윌리엄스의 ‘경계 정체성’이 그의 세계문학론과 어떻게 이어지는지를 살펴보기 위해 그의 주된 개념 중 하나인 ‘느낌의 구조’(structure of feeling)를 매개로 언어와 문학에 대한 생각의 흐름을 짚어보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Raymond Williams has been primarily known as a ‘cultural materialist’, but his identity as a Welshman has often been seriously overlooked in the realm of critical analysis. However, his Welsh identity occupies a very important place in his writings and thoughts, and it connects not only with his theories on language and culture but also with his stance on world literature.
Williams’s identity could be termed as a ‘border identity’, which reveals his experiences and consciousness navigating roughly two boundaries. One is the boundary between Wales and England, and the other relates to the rural and urban divide. Williams’s border identity reminds us of the need to apply an integrative perspective when reading his works, different from the conventional viewpoints. This perspective would merge his previously emphasized Marxist materialist thought with his Welsh consciousness. Only by restoring this integrative approach can we properly understand his interest and views on ‘world literature’. In this paper, we aim to explore how Williams’s ‘border identity’ connects with his theories on world literature, using one of his key concepts, ‘structure of feeling’, as a medium to trace his thoughts on language and literature.
