[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to examine the case of a convergent curriculum designed for regional problem-solving, and to empirically investigate its impact on students’ learning outcomes and career perceptions. Specifically, this research focuses on whether a university course, which was structured around the practical task of supporting local SMEs in their global market entry, can transcend traditional lecture-based approaches and serve as an effective model for strengthening learners’ competencies within the framework of university–industry–community collaboration.
[Methodology]The study analyzed the case of the course *Introduction and Practice of Glocal Marketer*, offered at B University in Busan during the 2024 academic year. Out of 83 students, 63 responded to a survey consisting of 29 questions measuring learning satisfaction, self-directed learning, collaborative experiences, and changes in career perception. In addition to quantitative analysis, qualitative responses were also examined to provide richer insights. The course was organized around team-based problem-solving projects that included company briefings, market research, global market analysis, strategic planning, and final presentations.
[Findings]The findings reveal several important outcomes. First, overall learning satisfaction was notably high, and students expressed a strong willingness to retake the course, indicating that regional problem-solving, project-based learning fosters deeper engagement than lecture-oriented formats. Second, teams with diverse academic backgrounds demonstrated significantly higher satisfaction than single-discipline teams, underscoring the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in generating innovative solutions. Third, participation in the course influenced students’ career perceptions, with increased interest in overseas employment and stronger awareness of contributing to the local community.
[Implications] Academically, this study provides empirical evidence that problem-based, convergent education can serve as an effective pedagogical model in higher education. Practically, it demonstrates that university–industry–community collaboration not only enhances students’ global competencies but also supports the internationalization efforts of regional SMEs. Moreover, the study highlights the utility of learning satisfaction as a meaningful indicator of educational outcomes, offering potential pathways for the standardization of convergent curricula. Ultimately, this research shows that regional problem-solving curricula can generate both educational innovation and broader socio-economic impact, thereby providing strategic guidance for curriculum development and educational policy at the institutional and regional levels.
