레비나스와 유럽 중심주의 = Levinas and Eurocentrism : Focusing on “La signification et le sens”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 문화에 대한 레비나스의 견해를 검토하기 위해 「의미화와 의미」를 분석한다. 「의미화와 의미」에서 그는 언어와 의미(화), 그리고 문화에 대한 현대 사유와 대결하면서, 서구(혹은, 유럽)에 대한 자신의 인식을 피력한다. 의미화는, 그것을 이끄는 (방향으로서의) 의미가 없이는 부조리를 초래할 뿐이다. 달리 말해, 방향 없는 문화, 예술의 범람은 우리를 부조리에서 건져내지 못한다. 그에 따르면, 비서구의 문화들이 창조하는 세계는 방향을 상실한 세계이다.
퐁티가 대변하는, 의미(화)에 대한 현대 사유는 문화들의 동등성을 주장함으로써 식민주의를 정당화하는 인식을 해체하는데 기여한다. 레비나스는 퐁티를 위시한 현대 사상가들의 이러한 탈식민주의적 경향을 긍정적으로 평가하면서도, 그것이 문화들에 대한 판단을 불가능하게 한다는 이유로 비판한다.
레비나스에게, 인간성은 성서와 그리스적인 것으로 구성되며, 이와 대조적으로 비 서구의 문화는 춤, ‘민속’이나 ‘지역 색’으로 폄하된다. 문화에 대한 그의 사유와, 그것과 연결된 서구 중심주의적 입장에 대한 분석은 우리에게 레비나스 철학을 재인식하는 기회를 제공할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes Levinas’s “La signification et le sens” to examine the viewpoint on culture of Levinas. There, he expresses his understanding on the west(or, europe) confronting himself with contemporary thoughts on language, ‘signification/sens,’ and culture. Signification, without sens, only causes absurdity. In other words, various cultures and arts without orientation could not save us from the absurdity of our lives.
Contemporary philosophical thoughts on signification/sens, of which Merleau-Ponty is representative, contribute to overcome colonialism by claiming the equivalence of cultures. On the one hand, Levinas positively estimates this decolonialistic tendency, on the other hand, he criticizes it on the grounds that it makes judgments on cultures impossible.
For Levinas, the humanity consists of the Bible and the Greeks. Contrary to this praise of the west, or western culture, non western cultures are regarded as dance, folklore and local color. The analysis of Levinas’s thought on culture and his eurocentristic position gives us an opportunity to recognize his philosophy―its threshold and its potentiality.
