도시공간 이미지의 재구성 = 이동성, 연결성, 그리고 디지털사진의 상상적 지리에 관한 탐색적 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 사람들의 일반 휴대용 디지털카메라나 디지털카메라폰으로 포착한 도시경험들이 웹상의 지도 안에 등록되고 집적되면서 형성되는 새로운 형태의 이미지 문화를 이론적으로 탐색해보고, 사람들이 쩍어 올린 사진이미지가 어떻게 새로운 형식의 지리정보를 구성하며 근대적 지도가 가졌던 역할을 확장시키고 있는지 사례를 통해 살펴보았다. 사진 찍는 행위가 웹에서의 다양한 커뮤니케이션 행위들과 연결되면서, 사진 찍는 행위의 즐거움이 강화되고 있고, 사람들이 사진을 찍고 공유하고 의미를 부여하는 방식이 바뀌고 있다. 특히 개인이 찍은 사진들이 웹 기반의 지리적 지도와 결합하면서, 이러한 사진들은 우리가 물리적 공간을 인식하고 그 안에 우리 자신을 위치지으며 그 공간들에 대해 말하는 방식에 깊이 관여하게 된다. 싸이월드의 지도 서비스에 관한 사례분석은 사진 이미지가 관습화된 지리적 상상을 확인하는 차원에서 머무는 것이 아니라, 개인의 경험적ㆍ유희적ㆍ심미적 해석을 담아내고 있음을 보여준다. 사진찍기 행위가 주로 스펙터클한 경관과 환영들에 이끌리고, 공간과의 관계는 이러한 시각적 자극을 중심으로 전개되고 있다. 개인이 사적으로 가진 공간의 과거와 현재에 관한 시각적 기억이 지도 위에서 결합되면서, 지도는 근대적 지도의 역할을 넘어 시각적 순간과 기억들이 모인 유동적인 지리적 공간 감각을 형성하는 플랫폼으로 기능하게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As cameras become everyday personal belongings, and photo-taking practices are connected to various communicative activities on the web, photographic images, taken by individuals, are increasingly proliferating and provide unprecedented sources of created contents in digital space. The technological environments, which intensify the playfulness of portable cameras and remediate oral performances related to photo-albums, reshape people's photographic practices, that is, the ways in which people photograph and make meanings out of their photographs, In particular, as individuals' photographs become associated with web-based geographical maps. they are profoundly engaging how we perceive, orientate ourselves in, and talk about the physical space. They contribute to form a new sense of place and to further make us perceive and interact with space via photographic eyes. This study attempts to look at the ways in which urban experiences, captured by people's portable digital cameras or camera phones, have been registered and constellated within the map on the web. It examines a new form of geographical information created by ordinary people, which tends to expand the existing role of maps. The case of the Cyworld's Story Map, an archive of geo-tagged photographs, exemplifies how personal experiences and expressions about places become a constitutive part of geo-spatial information on the web. This case shows that geographical imaginations constructed by people's photographs are hardly fixed or bounded but always in process. Rather than creating a single place-myth, they reflect people's experiences and expressive abilities, and provide a loosely-collaged image of a place, which collectively materializes individuals' perceptions and engagements with the place.
