영문학 작품을 통한 인성교육 : 『주홍글씨』를 중점으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

학생들은 입시교육 위주의 사회풍토 속에 각종 시험에서 좋지 않은 성적을 받으면 열등감, 패배감, 소외감을 느끼게 되고, 이는 정체성과 자존감의 악화를 불러올 수 있다. 심하면 자살로 이어지기도 한다. 이 연구는 이러한 현상을 완화하기 위한 한 방도로써 영문학 교육을 통한 인성 교육법에 관해 연구해 보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 인성과 인성교육이 무엇인지, 또 왜 중요한지 살펴보고, 영문학을 통한 교수 학습을 제시하여 논의를 구체화하였다. 인성과 인성교육의 정의는 시간의 흐름에 따라 변하기도 했지만, 인성은 인간다운 성품과 역량, 인성교육은 인간다운 성품과 역량을 교육하는 활동이라는 점은 변하지 않는 가치라 볼 수 있다. 이러한 가치를 실현하기 위한 수단으로써 이 연구는 영문학 교육에 중점을 맞춘 것이다.
다양한 문학을 통해 바람직한 인간상과 어떻게 바람직한 인간으로 거듭날 수 있을까에 관한 것을 배울 수 있고, 현실에서 경험하지 못하는 것을 간접적으로 경험할 수 있게 함으로써 바람직한 인성 함양을 할 기회를 제공해 주기도 한다. 특히, 영문학을 통해서는 인성교육뿐만 아니라 모국어 적 사고의 틀을 넘을 수 있게 하여, 다른 외국의 문화를 간접 경험할 수 있게 해 주어 창의적 사고를 발달시킬 수도 있다.
『주홍글씨』에서는 헤스터 프린의 모습을 통해 자존감에 대한 가치를 발견할 수 있었다. 헤스터 프린이 주변의 시선을 신경 쓰지 않고 자신의 할 수 있는 일을 통해 사람들에게 이전의 모습과는 다른 모습으로 인정을 받는 과정을 보며 자존감의 중요성을 깨달을 수 있다. 정직의 가치 또한 주홍글씨에서 찾아볼 수 있었다. 딤즈데일의 양면성을 통해 정직이란 남뿐만 아니라 자기 자신도 속이지 않고 거짓과 꾸밈없이 행동하는 것의 중요성을 알 수 있었다. 그는 헤스터 프린과 같은 죄를 범했지만 헤스터 프린과 다르게 그 죄를 숨기고 살아간다. 딤즈데일은 이야기 내내 죄책감에 시달리며 고통받는다. 마지막에서도 만인의 앞에서 죄를 고하고 정신적 승리와 마음의 평화를 얻으며 세상을 떠난다. 정직의 가치가 진정한 심정 해방을 불러오는 모습이다.
이러한 내용을 바탕으로 『주홍글씨』에 나타난 인성교육적 가치를 교육하기 위한 학습지도안을 구성하였다. 교육부 2018 인성교육에서 확대하는 과정 중심 평가에 따라 총 5차시의 수업 모형을 제시하였는데 1) 자세히 읽기 2) 학습자의 자기 비추기 3) 작품에 대한 토론 4) 자신에 대한 성찰 5) Before and After 발표이다. 이 모형을 바탕으로 총 5차시의 지도안을 구성하였다. 영문학을 통해 인성교육을 실천하고자 시도한 이 연구는 몇 가지 한계점을 가진다. 먼저, 영어 텍스트의 난이도에 따른 어려움이 있었다. 『주홍글씨』에 사용된 단어는 절대 쉽지 않다. 고2 이상의 학생들을 대상으로 해야만 소기의 성과를 달성할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 즉, 중·고교 영어교육 일선 현장에서 널리 활용되기는 쉽지 않을 것이다. 하지만 결과 중심 평가가 아닌 과정 중심 평가였기에 학생들이 부담 없이 영문학 수업을 통해 인성교육을 할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 줄 수 있다는 점에 의미를 두고자 한다. 또한, 실제 수업에 적용하지 못한 점도 한계라 할 수 있다. 향후 연구에서는 이 지도안과 더욱 발전된 지도안을 실제 수업에 적용하여 진행, 효과를 검증해볼 필요가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Students feel inferior, defeated, and alienated when they receive poor grades on various tests amid a social climate centered on university entrance exams, which can lead to deterioration of identity and self-esteem. Even worse, these feelings can lead to suicide. This study examined character education law through English literature as a way to alleviate this phenomenon. To this end, we first looked at the importance of and reasons for personality education and clarified our discussion with a presentation of teaching and learning through English literature. The definition of character and character education has changed over time, but the fact is that character education is an activity that educates human-like character and ability. This study focuses on English literature education as a means of realizing this ideal. Through a variety of literature, the student can learn about the desirable components of human nature and how to become a desirable human being, and indirectly experiencing things that one does not experience in real life also provides an opportunity to cultivate a desirable personality. English literature encourages not only character education but also a framework of thinking in one’s mother tongue, so that one can experience foreign cultures indirectly and develop creative thinking. In The Scarlet Letter, we were able to discover the value of self-esteem through the image of Hester Prynne. By witnessing what she can do without paying attention to the eyes around her, we realize the importance of self-confidence as people see her differently than they did before. The Scarlet Letter also emphasized the value of honesty. Dimmesdale's ambivalence shows the importance of being honest, not only to others but also to avoid being deceitful to oneself. He is guilty of the same crimes as Hester Prynne, but unlike Hester, he hides them. Dimmesdale suffers from guilt throughout the story. At the end of the day, he confessed his crime in front of everyone, gaining a spiritual victory and peace of mind. The value of honesty is what brings about the release of the heart. Based on the process-centric evaluation method that is distributed by the Korean Ministry of Education, a total of five classes were presented to English literature students. They involved: 1) detailed reading, 2) learner self-reflection and discussion of the work, 4) an announcement of "reflection on self," and 5) a before and after report presentation. This study, which tried to practice character education through English literature, has some limitations. First, there were difficulties due to the difficulty of English text. The words used in The Scarlet Letter are never easy. Only those high school students second-year or higher are believed to be able to achieve the desired reading level. In other words, it will not be easy to be use this lesson plan widely on the front lines of English education in middle and high schools. However, since character education is a process-oriented assessment, rather than a results-based evaluation, it is meaningful in that it will create an environment wherein students can learn personality through English literature classes without any burden. In addition, the failure to apply the lesson plans to actual classes is another limitation of this study. Future research needs to apply this and more advanced maps to real-life classes to validate their progress and effectiveness.
