메리 셸리의 『프랑켄슈타인』에 나타난 가부장적인 사회에 대한 비판의식 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 『프랑켄슈타인』에 나타난 가부장적인 사회에 대한 비판의식 연구를 목적으로 한다. 피조물의 평등 의식과 공감 능력이 어떻게 확립된 가부장적인 사회의 사회-문화적인 구조를 비판하는 요소로 작용하는지 분석한다. 피조물은 여성과 남성을 동등하게 여긴다는 점에서 남녀평등 의식을 가지고 있다. 작가는 피조물의 평등 의식을 가부장적인 사회의 편견과 대비시키며, 피조물의 평등 의식이 가부장적인 사회에 대한 재고를 함의할 수 있음을 시사한다. 피조물은 흉측한 외모로 인해 사람들에게 아무런 공감을 받지 못함에도 불구하고, 그는 극심한 곤경에 처한 드 레이시 가족과 빅터의 고난에 대해 공감한다. 곤경에 처한 타인에 대한 피조물의 공감 능력을 강조하면서, 작가는 선한 피조물을 괴물로 만들어 버리는 사회의 한계를 비난한다. 본 논문에서는 메리 셸리의 아버지인 고드윈의 저서 『칼렙 윌리엄스의 모험』을 『프랑켄슈타인』과 비교하며, 사회적 법과 규범이 정의롭지 못한 방식으로 사회적 약자를 범죄자로 낙인찍는 폭력의 양상을 추적한다. 진정한 괴물은 피조물이 아니라 정의롭지 못한 사회라는 것을 역설한다. 피조물은 사회 규범을 체득하여 사회에 편입하기 위해 최선을 다한다. 하지만 공감적 배려가 부족한 사회 규범은 피조물을 비정상으로 간주하여 소외시킨다. 이러한 사회의 한계를 극복하기 위해서는 공감적 규범이 필요하다. 공감적 규범의 토대 위에서 사회의 구성원들이 서로를 더 잘 이해한다면, 사회는 조화롭게 살기에 더 나은 곳이 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis aims to study criticism of patriarchal society in Frankenstein. It analyzes how Creature’s sense of equality and sympathy act as factors that criticize the established socio-cultural structure of patriarchal society. Creature cherishes the sense of equality in that he considers women and men equally. The author contrasts Creature’s sense of equality with the bias of patriarchal society against women, suggesting that it can entail a rethinking of the patriarchal society. Although Creature does not get any sympathy from people due to his hideous appearance, he sympathizes with the hardships of De Lacey family and Victor in dire straits. Emphasizing Creature’s sympathy for others in predicament, the author takes to task the limitations of society that turn good-natured Creature into a monster. In this thesis, Mary Shelley’s father, Godwin’s book The Adventures of Caleb Williams is compared with Frankenstein to trace the aspects of the violence by means of which the social law and norms brand socially disadvantaged individuals as criminals in unjust ways. It is stressed that the true monster is not Creature but the unjust society. Creature tries his best to acquire social norms to incorporate himself into the society without success. But social norms that lack sympathetic considerations marginalize Creature, regarding him as abnormal. In order to overcome these limitations of society, sympathetic norms are needed. If the members of society better understand one another on the basis of sympathetic norms, society will be a better place to live in harmony.
