보도사진 게이트키핑 - 관행화된 틀에 대한 사진기자의 인식을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 사진기자들을 심층 인터뷰하여 일정한 틀로 관행화된 보도사진의 유형, 사진기자들이 선호하는 대안적 사진의 유형, 그리고 보도사진이 일정한 틀로 관행화되는 과정과 이유를 알아보았다. 분석결과, 현행 보도사진은 전체 서술사진, 관습적 해석사진, 정형화된 구도의 사진, 연출사진 등 4개 유형으로 표준화되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 사진기자들의 대안적 사진은 부분 부각사진, 주관적 해석사진, 일탈적 구도의 사진, 미학적 예술성 사진, 실체적 사실성 사진 등 5개 유형으로 구분됐다. 이 연구에서 정답사진의 개념과 실상이 처음으로 밝혀졌으며 연출사진의 원인과 실체도 구체적으로 드러났다. 또 게이트키핑, 2차적 추측, 기자들의 방어주의와 꾸러미 저널리즘 등의 개념이 국내 맥락에서 현재화되어 있는 실태와 그런 개념들이 보도사진의 표준화 관행형성에 어떻게 복합적으로 작용하고 있는지도 밝혀졌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Based on in-depth interviews with seven photojournalists working for five newspaper organizations in South Korea, this study examined how they perceive the conventional photography of newspapers and what alternatives they suggest to that photography. The conventional photography perceived by photojournalists was classified into four categories, such as Wholly Descriptive Photos, Routinely Explanatory Photos, Standardized Composition Photos, and Staged Photos. On the other hand, the alternative photography suggested by photojournalists was classified into five categories, such as Partially Embossed Photos, Subjectively Explanatory Photos, Deviated Composition Photos, Aesthetic Photos, and Substantially Realistic Photos. Critics made by photojournalists suggest that current newspaper photography is repetitive both in content and composition. They thought that gatekeepers chose news photos from a repertoire of standard types of pictures that used a limited number of visual components and compositional devices. Specifically, this study first discovered the concept of so-called "correct answers of news photos" in the Korean context, signifying standard pictures for standard situations. This study also discovered the actual realities of staged photos and how they were produced in a repetitive fashion. Besides such results, it is found how concepts like gatekeeping, second-guess, and pack journalism were actually realized in Korean photojournalism and how they comprehensively contributed to the formation of current routines of newspaper photography. Criticizing current routines, photojournalists suggested that newspaper photography should adopt both subjective and aesthetic aspects of photojournalism. They hoped for autonomy and creativeness in taking and reporting news photos.
