The present study is an effort to plan early childhood music curriculum suitable to the musical characteristics of children after analyzing the history of Korean curriculum in viewpoint of imagination. This study starts from the historical examination of the concept of imagination. Then, the relationship between music and imagination was surveyed, and the relationship between imagination and the musical development of children was investigated. In the examination of early childhood music curriculum since 1945, it was found that the present curriculum has been far from developing the imagination of children.
From the results the followings were found:
1. The imagination, in spite of being one of the most important mental activities of mankind, has been long ignored as disturbing the scientific truth or logical thinking. To the best, it was thought necessary only for the artists. However, in the realm of science not technolgy, theorists or inventors find motive for their great achievement through the imagination or illogical inspiration.
2. In the examination of the history of concept of imagination, it was found that from the 19th Century, the concept of free, poetic and new imagination has replaced the concept of the irrational, imitative, false, childish and useless imagination.
3. In the examination of the relationship between music and imagination, it was found that music was the best media for the development of imagination, and in that sense the music education in early childhood was very important.
4. In the analysis of the present curriculum, it was found that early childhood music education need so much programme for developing the imagination of children. Until now, the technical and mechanical instruction of fundamental singing and was emphasized in comparison with composition and listening.
5. The present music curriculum under analysis should be criticized and throughly modificated in the perspective of developing children's imagination.
