THE famous seventeenth century dramatist, Thomas Dekker, the bitter enemy of Shakespeare's rival, "rare Ben Jonson," was a man who lived recklessly in a wild fierce whirl of constant revelry and passion, a great frequenter of the London taverns. He describes a flourishing ordinary of his day as one to which "your stale Bachilor and your thrifty attorneys do resort; the price threepence; the room as full of company as a jaile, and, indeed, divided into several wardes, like the beds of an hospitale."
