In our surroundings, there are landscapes of the unlimited sky and forests. These daily landscapes continues to change every hour, depending on the time, location, weather, and other factors. The various landscapes evokes invisible, complex emotions and interacts and communicates with our inner selves. A landscape is a section of animals, humans, buildings, land, and nature seen from a single viewpoint, and is also known as scenary.
Studies using landscape in the field of construction, environment, and art are frequent, but it is limited to textile art in the field of fashion. The visual influence of the landscape evokes invisible, subjective emotions of an individual and it also evokes thoughts in texts. As for studies on text, there are no studies combining the landscape and text, whereas there are many preceding studies on humanities, philosophy, speech, and fashion. Thus, this study aims to use landscape images and texts and incorporate their complementary and mutually expandable relationships into fashion design works.
The following points are the results of theoretical contemplation of landscape images and texts.
First, the landscape image as a picture can be broken down into time and space. The time component can be related to factors such as day, night, and seasons. The space component can be broken down into whole and partial expression of the landscape through component factors.
Second, a text consists of phrases, clauses, and sentences. It may develop into typography, where symbolic/additional meanings are granted through visual/formative expressions.
Third, landscape images and text may have complementary relationships when the contexts of their expression and meaning are similar/identical. Through this relationship, the range of interpretation can be limited, the inference of the symbols and meanings can be induced, and the deliverance of the message can be reinforced. That is, the landscape image and text play explanatory functions on each other. On the other hand, when the context of the image and text is different, they have a mutually expandable relationship. This expands the limits of inference, leading to expansion and conflict in various areas of symbols and meanings.
Based on the above theoretical points, the modern fashion examples reflecting landscape images and text were sorted and analyzed in terms of meaning and composition. The following are the results of the study.
In terms of the meaning of modern fashion examples using landscape images, it is possible to infer the perspective and meaning of landscape that the brand wants to express. As for composition, when the landscape image is expressed on the entire outfit, it is possible to intentionally connect the image of each item. The illusion effect appears, such as focusing the visual connectivity of readable images. On the other hand, in partial outfit expression, the connection of items is not possible, but the image can receive more attention.
The modern fashion examples using text were also sorted into meaning and composition to be studied. As for meaning, it can be seen that the symbols and ideologies of the collection were directly borrowed from the dictionary definition of the text. As for composition, when the text is expressed as a whole, it focuses on the role of a formative image rather than the meaning implied through the patterned text. On the other hand, in partial expression of the text, the text and the margin coexist, and the focus is on message delivery and representation of the text.
Modern fashion examples combining images and text were analyzed, by classifying them into complementary and mutually expandable relationships. In complementary relationships, the image and text represents(image) and describes(text) the context and meaning, thus leading to objective interpretation. In mutually expandable relationships, various meanings and contexts are manifested through contradiction/non-connection/conflict between the image and text, thus leading to subjective interpretation.
Based on the above theoretical contemplation and case analysis, a fashion design study of 8-piece outfit that combines the whole expression of the landscape image with the text in typography was conducted.
First, in fashion design planning, the theme was combining landscape images and text. Based on this theme, the researcher used landscape images taken with mobile phone as textiles. As for the text, an English typography was used. The meaning of the landscape image of this work is nature and streets of the city, dyed with various colors of the certain hours. The composition of expressed wholly on the outfit. The text of the English typography contains words that are relevant to the landscape image, and also words that are irrelevant, and the composition was expressed partially on the outfit. Thus, the relationship of the landscape image and text in this work is both complementary and mutually expandable.
Second, in fashion design designing, the silhouette was exaggerated with oversize, with clear expression of the straight line, curved line, and diagonal lines. To maintain visual balance of the exaggerations, the size of the top and bottom were designed in contrast. The top has oversized bodice with design points of large collars. There are various lengths, from cropped length to length that covers the ankles. The focus of the bottom was put on the silhouette of the straight line, curved line, and diagonal lines, and there are various lengths from short to maxi. The design points are the changes in the crotch length and cuffs at the bottom hems.
A total of 17 pieces of clothes were made, including 2 coats, 6 jackets, 2 blouses, 1 one-piece dress, and 6 pants.
Polyester material was used, depending on glossiness.
The colors of the pieces consists of colors extracted from the landscapes. The main colors are ones that can be seen often in everyday life, such as blue of the sky, orange of the certain hours, and green of natural objects. The point colors are pink and violet, which can only be seen for a short time of the day.
As for the expression technique, the digital textile printing was used for landscape images, and the text was expressed with embroidery.
As for the details, different typography was embroided on the back of all top outfits to give a sense of unity, and additional embroidery was placed in various positions.
Third, in the fashion design work production stage, the above development process, pattern making, and fitting procedures were conducted, and the works were made after several modifications.
This study is meaningful in that it suggested a creative fashion design research method by attempting to combine landscape image and text, and a combination of digital and analog techniques in expression. Hopefully this study will contribute to expanding the field of creative fashion design research, and to setting the direction for relevant follow-up studies.
