This study explores the impact of virtual reality (VR) technology on human sensory perception and cognition through two key concepts: liminality and the expansion of embodiment. VR dissolves the boundaries between virtual and real, offering participants a unique, immersive experience that induces physical and psychological transformations. This experience encompasses the participant's traversing between reality and virtuality, undergoing physical and cognitive transitions in a liminal state. The primary research objective is to analyze how liminality in VR transforms and manifests artistic experiences, focusing on Gilles Jobin’s VR performance <VR_I>. In <VR_I>, participants enter a virtual world, experiencing a shift in their perception of body and space, and expanding their physical self through interactions with dancer avatars. Throughout this process, participants navigate the boundaries between virtual and real, encountering profound embodied and psychological changes. The study delves deeper by comparing VR art with traditional artistic experiences to understand how it generates new aesthetic encounters. Specifically, the research aims to illuminate the novel aesthetic possibilities offered by immersive VR performances and propose methods for expanding human artistic experiences. It investigates how VR technology extends the boundaries of art, exploring the unique potential of VR art beyond mere technological advancement. By providing an in-depth understanding of how liminality and embodiment expansion can transform the aesthetic characteristics of art, this study seeks to contribute a new direction for future VR art research.
