Response behaviors of a piecewise-linear system are examined in both time and probability domains. A semi-analytical procedure is developed to predict system behaviors by evaluating joint probability density functions of the Fokker—Planck equation of the stochastic piecewise—linear system under random excitations via the path—integral solution.
Using the semi—analytical procedure, the presence of potential coexisting responses are predicted and examined. It is found that coexisting responses can arise due to the external randomness, which cannot be revealed by the analysis of deterministic system responses alone. The semi—analytical procedure developed in this study can provide global information of the system behaviors in the probability domain and that it can verify the potential coexisting responses and discern the relative strength of the coexisting response attractors.
