리영희의 공화국 ―70년대와 80년대 초반의 논의를 중심으로 = Lee Young-Hee`s Idea of a Republic ―His Discussions in the 1970s and the early 1980s

This paper is to analyze of Lee Young-Hee`s own writings, interviews and essays, which are considered as valuable sources in determining the nature and contents of the so-called `Alternative Republic,` more or less designed and created by Lee Young-Hee in the 1970s and early 1980s. Further analyzes why Lee Young-Hee emphasized `Moral human type` and `Reconstruction of the people`s minds,` and based his ideas for an `alternative form of a republic` upon the `Chinese Revolution model,` the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In the 1970s and 1980s, Lee Young-Hee`s thinking of the concept of `Republic` actually came from his own experience of the 1940s, which witnessed the end of the Japanese Occupation period, as well as from his experience of the Korean war, and not to mention the rest of the 1950s. The rampant state ideology, irrational madness throughout the country, passive silence of the people, and the Koreans` failure to eliminate all the legacies that had been accumulated during the colonial period, all had strong influence upon his decision to pursue alternative republic. In the end, corrupted capitalism, egoistic families and society, elites with desires and intentions totally against the very interest of the Korean people, forced him to dream a moral, albeit poor, community--based republic, in the image of the Chinese Revolution model. Lee Young-Hee, who was not that well aware of the reality at the time, as he spent the Korean war and the rest of the 1950s as a soldier in the army, was more than troubled by his past which had only been silent, passive and powerless. So he decided to actively comment upon the real world with his own words, and began to do so in the 1970s. To him, the time after the 1970s was surely the `present,` yet he was always very conscious about the past, the time that got away. Literally speaking, he responded to the realities of the 1970s and the early 1980s with his own personal wounds and trauma, which had accumulated during the Korean war and the 1950s and then continued to haunt himself in the 1960s. While doing so he imagined an `Alternative republic` and `alternate types of people,` and wanted to enlighten the masses with all of his insights. This article is an effort to not merely analyze the texts written by Lee Young-Hee, but determine the actual process he displayed in creating the idea of an `Alternative republic and an alternate type of human,` through examining his own experiences from colonial period to 1950`s.
