1920년대 초 식민지 조선의 아인슈타인 전기와 상대성이론 수용 양상 = The Reception of Einstein and his Relativity Theory in the Early 1920`s

This article examines print media and books to find out the process through which Einstein and his relativity theory was introduced in the Colonial Korea. In the early 1920`s, many writings about Einstein or his theory sprung out. Usually, the introducers who wrote or spoke about them have had experiences of studying abroad, for instance in Japan, U.S. or, Europe. During the colonial era, they continued to influence Korean students and the public as writers, teachers or speakers. According to them, knowing Einstein and his theory, which represents `scientific revolution`, was a requirement for the modern man. After the World War Ⅰ, when `science`, `revolution` and `modern man` were emphasized, the image of Einstein was consumed as a hero. This trend was influenced by the Japanese and Chinese intellectuals who, regardless of their political positions, embraced Einstein and his theory positively. In the late 1910`s, there was an Einstein boom in Japan and China. Bertrand Russell introduced Einstein as a modern revolutionary hero alongside Lenin on his lecture tour in those two countries. In 1922, Einstein became even more popular in Northeast Asia because of his visits in China and Japan and of his receiving Nobel Prize at that time. Under these circumstances, the first and the only book about Einstein in the Colonial Korea was published in 1922. Kang mae, who was a teacher, journalist and speaker, wrote and published the book, and the other publisher was A. L. Becker, an American mathematical physics professor, who wrote the preface. After collating with Japanese texts, it turned out that the book was an edited-translation of two Japanese books: Ishiwara Jun`s and Takeuchi Tokio`s. In 1920`s, many intellectuals showed interests in Einstein and his theory, especially the Japanese Imperial Universities, publishing companies and professors accepted them wholeheartedly. They invited Einstein and planed his lecture for practical reason such as making profits or adopting advanced technology. They also did so for ideological purpose to support (Jewish) scientists under German`s political oppression. After tracing the process, it was revealed that Einstein and his theory were transferred from German/English to Japan to Korea, which is often the case with other translations. The Japanese books of Einstein and his theory referred to several English/German books and were revised for their needs. Although Colonial Korean intellectuals immediately accepted Einstein, it still uncertain that how they influenced Korean society, in terms of academically or politically.
