Establishing the relationship between myself and the other, or between individuals and society, was a main issue penetrating the magazine ‘Gaebyeok’. The core members of Gaebyeok saw that both individuals and society always coexist in our lives, and that selfishness for individuals and affection for society are both important. They advocated the ‘coexistence’ of individualism and socialism as a clue to new ethics. This attitude also appears in the art criticism of Gaebyeok. Through the pages of Gaebyeok, the dualistic art theory of ‘Nietzsche’ and ‘Tolstoy’, ‘individualism’ and ‘socialism’, ‘art for art’ and ‘art for life’, ‘bourgeois art’, and ‘proletarian art’ was embodied, and the art theory of seeking convergence by encompassing the opposing two within the system was firmly established.
