현수법장의 교판론과 퇴옹성철의 불교관 비교 연구 = A comparative study of Xian Shou Fazang’s theory of classification of Buddhist teachings and Toeong Sungchol҆s view of Buddhism: With Reference to Toeong’s Sermon of One Hundred Days(百日法門)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 현수법장(643-712)의 화엄교판관과 퇴옹성철(1912-1993)의 불교관을 비교 검토한 것이다. 특히 화엄교판에 대한 퇴옹의 해석 특징과 퇴옹이 지향한 불교관을 『백일법문』을 통해 검토하였다.
퇴옹은 “과거·현재·미래 삼세의 모든 부처님과 역대의 조사(祖師) 모두가 자기 마음을 깨쳐서 성불했지, 언어와 문자에 의지해서 도를 얻은 사람은 단 한 분도 없다”는 관점에 의해 교종 전체와 선종을 구분하는 관점을 제시한다. 『백일법문』에서는 불교 교학의 정통성을 판석하는 기본적 관점으로 중도를 제시하는데, 이 중도는 화엄사상에 기반한 이해라고 생각된다. 퇴옹은 선의 이론적 기반인 화엄사상을 원용하여 불교 교학 전반을 이해하고자 하였다. 퇴옹이 『백일법문』에서 강조하는 ‘진여법계의 중도’가 불교 교학전반을 이해하는 틀로 활용한 것은, 돈오돈수론을 중심으로 하는 그의 선불교 전통에 대한 인식과 관련이 깊다. 곧 퇴옹은 화엄사상과 화엄교판이 지향하는 본래의 의도를 드러내는 것보다는 자신이 생각한 중도의 관점을 화엄사상과 화엄교판에 의해 드러내는데 더 많은 관심을 기울이고 있다고 생각한다.
퇴옹은 『백일법문』에서 자신이 지향하는 불교관을 제시하면서 동시에 불교의 시대적 정당성 확보에도 많은 관심을 할애하고 있다고 생각된다. 이 같은 부분은 퇴옹의 관점에서 보면, 불교전통이 약화되었던 시대적 상황에 대한 고려, 그리고 새롭게 등장한 근대불교학에 대한 대응, 다종교시대에 있어서 불교의 사회적 역할 등에 대한 고민까지 일정 부분 담보하고 있다고 생각된다. 이것이, 불교전통을 기반으로 하는 승가와 불자 교육에 있어서 기본적 관점이 미비했던 현실에 대한 선사의 응병여약으로서 ‘백일법문’을 위치 지우게 되는 이유이기도 하다.
다만 이것은 논의의 편의를 위해서이지 사실 전체 『선문정로』에서 이 돈오원각론, 실참실오론, 구경무심론은 서로가 서로를 성립시키는 3위일체적 관계에 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis is a comparative review of Xian Shou Fazang(643-712)’s Huayan Classification of Buddhist teachings and Toeong Sungchol(1912-1993)’s view of Buddhism. In particular, it deals with the characteristics of Toeong҆s interpretation of Huayan Classification and the view of Buddhism appeared at the Sermon of One Hundred Days(百日法門).
Toeong proposed the view that “among the Buddhas of the past, present, and future, all saints of the past were awakened by their minds to achieve Buddha-hood. No one has gained awakening through relying on language and script.״ In his Sermon of One Hundred Days, the middle way is presented as a basic view point that marks the legitimacy of Buddhist teaching, which is thought to be an understanding based on the Huayan Thought. Toeong attempted to understand the Buddhist doctrines by applying the Huayan thought, which is the theoretical basis of Seon. The middle way of the dharma and the world of true suchness, emphasized in his book, was used as his framework for understanding the entire Buddhist doctrines. His understanding of Buddhism has deeply been related to his recognition of Seon Buddhist tradition, centered on sudden awakening with sudden practice. Indeed, he was paying more attention to revealing his view of the middle way through Huayan thought as well as its classification of Buddhist teachings rather than to revealing his original intention.
Toeong is thought to have devoted to pay attention to secure the contemporary legitimacy of Korean Buddhism. In Toeong’s point of view, it has believed that a certain amount of consideration was given to the situation of his time when the Buddhist tradition was weakened. He was responding to the newly emerged modern Buddhism, and to the social role of Buddhism in the contemporary multi-religious era. This could be the reason why his Sermon of One Hundred Days was placed as his recipe for the contemporary Korean Buddhist situation where there was a gap between traditional Buddhist monks and lay Buddhists.
