생물학적 접근을 통한 웨어러블 아트의 발전 가능성 연구 = The study on development possibility of wearable art through biological approach

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The radical progress of modern biology has been evolving in a wide range of areas, changing our life. Biology has also been applied to arts and brought an entirely new trend called biological arts, where biological materials such as animals and plants, microorganisms and cellular tissues are used a medium. With this background, wearable arts also become to recognize the possibility of various expression ways by covering the extension concept of new media, escaping from conventional materials and meaning of clothes and jewellery through biological metaphor. Hereupon, this thesis aims to present the significance and possibility thereof by focusing on expression cases through biological metaphor from the perspective of wearable art. This study looked into the concept and expression cases of biological art, and confirmed the possible for vital activity of microorganisms and genes to aesthetically work in the category of art. Also, this study considered work cases of wearable art using a biological media and technology on the basis of the concept of wearable art and cogitation on the body, and the result of consideration is as follows: First, wearable art presents the possibility of eco-friendly material development. Second, wearable art brings change in perception of human body by inducing aesthetic metamorphosis. Third, the wearable art using microorganisms and genes transfers from the inside of human body to outside, shows expansion of self identity through division of object and subject, thus overthrowing subjectivity and leading corporeality into transition to a new human. Such a process leads the prescribed corporeality and the concept of a human into convergence with science, and achieves artistic practice towards different beauty of life embodied through this convergence. The wearable art through such a biological approach connotes positive possibility of new medium, semantic, formal expansion. However, wearable art uses a living organism as a medium and therefore accompanies a discussion about bioethics and moral perspective, so deliberation of this in sociocultural context should be accompanied. This study is expected to be helpful as a new approach to extend the expression and significance of wearable arts based on a positive possibility of biological approach.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 생물학의 급진적인 진보는 광범위한 분야에 걸쳐 진화하며 우리의 삶에 변화를 주고 있다. 이는 예술에도 활용되어 살아있는 유기체인 동식물, 미생물, 세포조직, 유전자등의 생물학적 물질이 매체로 이용되는 생물학적 예술이라는 새로운 경향을 불러온다. 이러한 배경 속에서 웨어러블 아트 역시 생물학적 메타포를 통해 통념적으로 인식되는 의상과 장신구의 재료와 의미에서 탈피하여 새로운 매체의 확장적 개념을 포괄하며 다양한 표현 가능성을 인식한다. 이에 본 논문은 웨어러블 아트의 관점에서 생물학적 은유를 통한 표현사례들에 방점을 두고 그 의의와 가능성을 제시하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 일차적으로 생물학적 예술의 개념과 표현사례에 대해 알아보고 미생물과 유전자의 생명활동이 예술의 범주 안에서 심미적으로 작용할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 더불어 웨어러블 아트의 개념과 신체에 대한 사유를 바탕으로 생물학적 매제와 기술을 활용한 웨어러블 아트의 작품사례를 고찰한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 친환경적인 소재 개발의 가능성을 제시한다. 둘째, 신체의 미적 변형을 유도하여 신체에 대한 인식의 변화를 불러온다. 셋째, 인간과 공생하는 미생물과 유전자를 이용한 웨어러블 아트는 신체 내부에서 외부로 전위되어 객체와 주체의 분열을 통해 자아 정체성의 확장을 보여주며 주체성을 전복하고 신체성을 새로운 인간으로의 이행으로 이끈다. 이는 규정된 신체성과 인간이라는 개념을 과학과의 융합 그리고 이를 통해 구현된 생명에 대한 또 다른 아름다움에 대한 예술적 실천을 이룬다. 이러한 생물학적 접근을 통한 웨어러블 아트는 새로운 매체적, 의미적, 형식적 확장의 긍정적인 가능성을 내포한다. 그러나 장르 특성상 살아있는 유기체를 매체로 하므로 생명윤리와 도덕적 관점에 대한 논의를 동반하므로 이에 대한 사회문화적 맥락에서의 숙고가 동행되어야 한다. 본고는 생물학적 접근의 긍정적 가능성을 중심으로 웨어러블 아트의 예술적 표현성과 의미를 확장하기 위한 새로운 접근에서 활용되길 기대한다.
