기억의 서사를 통한 가구조형 연구 : 연구 작품 <기억을 담는 가구>를 중심으로 = Furniture design reflecting narratives of personal memories

The purpose of this dissertation is to find out the artistic significance and academic value of the author’s doctorate furniture design project <Furniture of Memories> through understanding its background and process, and analyzing its results.
This study consists of four chapters including theoretical study of 'Memory' and 'Narrative', which are the main subjects of the project; review of the previous research works; and analysis of the author’s work <Furniture of Memories>.
In Chapter Ⅰ, background, purpose, extent and methods of study were described. In particular, as a background of this study, the main issues in author’s Master’s thesis ‘Emotionally Sustainable Design’ were summarized, and current trends of related works to this research project were noted as following three trends; First, broader perspectives and concepts on the function of furniture as an artistic medium, second, highlights of personal memory and narratives in the field of contemporary art and design, and the third, stress on conceptual elements in the evaluation of works of art.
In Chapter Ⅱ, to found the theoretical background of this study, theoretical investigation and reviews of previous works related to 'Memory' and 'Narrative' were carried out. In theoretical investigation, in order to understand functions and concepts of memory and narrative in one’s life, it was questioned how memory functions in the process of meaning-making of one’s life of present and future. With this respect, memory and narrative could be re-defined from a wider perspective, which supports the approaches of the author, and the meaning of memory was also examined under the condition of creative activities of arts and design.
Reviewing works of art and design with the themes of ‘memory and narrative’ since the late 20th century after modernism, representative project examples and artists who have performed their creative activities in the field of personal memory and narrative were selected and analyzed.
In Chapter Ⅲ, the author's work <Furniture of Memories> was analyzed. During this process, first, the author examined overall flow of her creative attempts that she had continued, and the background of establishing of subjects for this research project was explained. Next, in order to illustrate the formation of the design concepts for the project, more specific information was summarized as follows: First, extraction of main key words of research project, second, setting of characteristics of project presentation, and the third, setting of methodological characteristics for design expressions.
According to author's individual life story, which was a background of this project, the works of furniture were exhibited under the titles of 'Cabinet of the memory, Goteborg container, and Another light’. The project was based on the places in the memory that the author wanted to look back, and the main motif came from the Sinjeong-dong house where she spent her childhood, a room in Goteborg, Sweden where she spent her early thirties with deep agony of future life, and the Dunchon-dong house where she made a new home today.
Overall, the works of this research project was analyzed by assigning the characteristics of cases that were studied in the previous research works in Chapter Ⅱ. The task was to define what creative activity for this design work means and effects to the author as a narrative element of personal memories. The contents were summarized as following four ways: leaving traces of one’s presence, recalling and communicating the nostalgia on one’s past, constructing of one’s own subjective world, facing and reconciliation with problems of life.
In Chapter Ⅳ, synthesizing the contents of the research as a whole, conclusion of the study was presented. In addition, the significance, limitation of the research project, suggestions for future research were added.
As a result, the author examined true meaning of various images in memory through the creative process of furniture making. The process of furniture creation enabled the author to reconstruct and materialize her individual memory of past into current life. Through this, the author could approach to a task that redefines the process of furniture creation with new values. The author found that the experience of this research project offered her an opportunity to explore and redefine individual memories of life story and its meanings continuously. And she also confirmed that it had a great meaning as an artistic endeavors that sustain forgotten time, place, and emotion amongst individual memories. In this sense, this research project <Furniture of Memories> emphasized the significance of the furniture as a medium, which led reflexive thinking about one’s life. Moreover, it was suggested that the furniture functioned as an artistic medium by providing opportunities of artistic thinking closer than the real life. In terms of significance of the study, a new concept of furniture creation was proposed in this study.
Meanwhile, this research project has a significant meaning to the author herself in terms of elevating the issues of emotional relationship and sustainability between people and things from conceptual exploration stage to realization stage of creative process. However, the author recognizes the limited scope of works that could be implemented by only one attempt. The author has a challenge of the future to explore more diverse experiments and design projects for the issue of memory and narrative. The author is also looking forward to deriving a more substantial answer on the issue of sustainability, which the author has been seeking to.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구자의 박사학위 청구 작품 <기억을 담는 가구>는 연구자가 기억하고 싶은 스스로의 삶에 대한 이야기를 가구라는 매체 안에 표현하고 있는 작업으로, 기억의 서사를 바탕으로 한 가구조형의 새로운 방법을 실험하고 가구 개념의 발전적 확장을 이끄는 것을 목표로 진행되었다. 본 논문은 <기억을 담는 가구>의 형성 배경과 진행 과정을 이해하고 작품 내용과 작업 결과를 분석하기 위한 글이다.
논문은 총 Ⅳ장으로 구성되었으며, 본론의 내용은 크게 연구의 주제인‘기억’과‘서사’에 관한 이론적 연구 및 선행 작품 연구, 연구 작품 분석으로 이루어져 있다.
Ⅰ장 서론에서는 연구의 배경, 연구의 목적, 연구방법과 범위를 설명하였다. 특히 본 연구의 배경으로서 연구자의 석사학위논문‘정서적으로 지속 가능한 디자인’의 주요 논점을 요약하고, 연구 작품 관련 분야의 최근 경향 중 세 가지; 첫째, 가구를 예술적 매체로 바라보는 관점과 그를 통한 가구 개념의 확장, 둘째, 동시대 조형예술 분야에서 개인적 기억과 서사의 문제 부각, 셋째, 예술작품의 평가에 있어서 개념적 요소의 강조 경향을 지적하였다.
Ⅱ장은 이론적 배경으로 연구의 주제인‘기억’과‘서사’에 대하여 이론적 연구와 선행 작품 연구의 두 부분으로 나누어 검토하였다. 이론적 연구에서는 기억과 서사의 개념을 고찰하였고, 기억 작용의 다양한 방식을 이해하는 관점에서 몸과 기억, 사물과 기억의 문제에 대하여 살펴보았다. 이로써 기억과 서사라는 두 주제가 연구 작품의 창작적 관점에서 어떻게 재정의 될 수 있는지, 삶의 기억에 대한 문제가 본 연구와 같은 조형예술의 창작활동에서 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있는지를 살펴보았다. 선행 작품 연구에서는 20세기 후반 모더니즘 이후의 미술과 가구조형 분야에서 개인적 기억을 서사적 요소로 내세운 대표적인 작품 사례 및 작가를 선정하여 그 창작활동이 지니는 의미와 효과를 중심으로 그 특성을 파악하였다.
Ⅲ장에서는 연구자의 연구 작품을 분석하였다. 이 과정에서 연구자는 우선 그 동안 연구자가 지속적으로 수행해 온 창작적 시도의 전체적인 흐름을 검토하고, 그 내용이 연구 작품과 어떤 관련이 있는지를 구체화함으로써 연구 작품의 주제 형성 배경을 설명하였다.
이어, 작품의 조형적 개념 형성 과정을 보다 구체적으로 제시하기 위하여 첫째, 작품 내용의 주요 키워드 도출, 둘째, 작품 연출의 기본 방식 설정, 셋째, 조형적 표현 형식의 특성 설정 내용을 요약하였다.
연구 작품은 그 배경이 된 연구자 개인의 삶에 대한 이야기의 내용에 따라,‘Part1. 기억의 캐비닛, Part2. 예테보리 컨테이너, Part3. 또 다른 빛’이라는 제목과 함께 제시되었다. 이는 연구자가 간직하고 되돌아보고 싶은 기억 속의 장소를 기준으로 구성된 것으로, 유년기를 보낸 신정동 집, 청년기 삶의 방향에 대하여 깊이 고민했던 스웨덴 예테보리의 방, 그리고 오늘날 새로운 가정을 이루고 살고 있는 둔촌동 집이 모티브가 되었다.
종합적으로, Ⅱ장의 선행 작품 연구과정에서 도출된 작품 사례의 특성에 대입하여 연구 작품을 분석하였다. 이는 개인적 기억을 서사적 요소로 내세운 가구조형의 창작활동이 연구자에게 전달하는 의미와 효과가 무엇인지를 밝히는 작업으로서, 그 내용은 다음의 네 가지로 요약되었다: 존재 흔적의 기록, 추억의 회상과 소통, 주관적 세계의 구성, 그리고 삶의 문제에 대한 대면과 화해가 그것이다.
Ⅳ장에서는 논문의 내용을 전체적으로 종합하여 연구의 결론을 제시하였다. 이와 함께, 연구 작품과 논문의 의의 및 한계점, 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 추가하였다.
결론적으로, 연구자는 연구자 개인의 삶에 대한 기억을 현재의 삶 속에 재구성하고 구체화하는 가구조형의 과정을 통해 기억 속의 다양한 이미지들이 전달하는 진정한 의미를 검토하고 이를 새로운 가치로 재정의 하는 작업에 접근할 수 있었다. 연구 작품의 창작은 개인의 삶을 구성하는 기억의 이야기와 그 의미를 끊임없이 탐구하고 재정의해 나가는 경험을 제공해주었다. 그리고 이로써 개인의 기억 속에서 잊혀져가는 시간, 장소, 그리고 그에 대한 감정을 지속시키기 위한 예술적 노력으로서의 가구조형의 의미를 확인할 수 있었다. 이런 의미에서, 본 연구의 의의는 삶에 대한 성찰적 사고를 이끄는 매개물로서의 가구의 의미를 강조하고, 가구가 현실적 삶과 보다 더 가까운 거리에서 예술적 사고의 기회를 제공하는 예술적 매개체로서의 기능을 수행할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시함으로써 가구 창작에 대한 새로운 개념을 제안한 점이다
연구자에게 본 연구는 그동안 개념적 탐구의 단계에 머물러 있었던‘기억의 이야기를 통한 사람과 사물의 정서적 관계와 지속 가능성’의 문제를 실행 단계로 이끄는 창작 과정으로서의 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 하지만 연구자는 한 번의 연구 작품을 통해서 구현할 수 있는 창작의 범위가 제한적일 수밖에 없음을 인정하고, 기억의 서사를 통한 가구조형에 대한 보다 다각적 측면에서의 개념적 탐구와 조형적 실험을 앞으로 연구자가 지속해 나가야 할 과제로 삼고자 한다. 그리고 그 과정에서 연구자가 추구해온 지속 가능성의 문제에 대한 보다 본질적인 해답도 함께 도출해낼 수 있으리라 기대해 본다.
