It is well known that scales of low reliability cause attenuation in structural coefficient estimation. To prevent the attenuation, we usually apply a two-stage estimation procedure with instrumental variables. If we can estimate reliability of a scale, it becomes easier to correct the attenuation by dividing the structural coefficient estimates with the square root of the reliability estimate. Cronbach’s alpha is the most popularly used reliability estimate. If a scale does not follow the tau-equivalent measurement model, however, Cronbach’s alpha produces a smaller estimate than the true reliability and results in a larger adjusted estimate than the true structural coefficient. Therefore, it is important to check the measurement properties of a scale and to apply the most proper reliability coefficient.
‘Market Orientation’ is one of the most controversial marketing constructs with respect to the measurement properties of its scales. There is no consensus in terms of their dimensionality, underlying measurement model, and/or reflective versus formative nature. This study provides a procedure and criteria that may be applied to empirically judge the controversies.
By applying the procedure and criteria to the two most frequently used market orientation scales, MKTOR and MARKOR, we found out that both of them failed to satisfy the unidimensionality of their items. MARKOR seems to follow the common factor model, while MKTOR may be said to obey the congeneric model. If we estimate the reliability of MARKOR with Cronbach’s alpha instead of omega, which is known to be the most appropriate for the scale of the common factor model and always to give the bigger reliability estimate than alpha, the attenuation correction effect differs just about 2.4 percent. We safely support the use of Cronbach’s alpha as the reliability coefficient as far as researchers do their best in developing reflective measures of the Likert type.
