(Multilingual Abstract)

A study on the process through which Omine, a maid, steals money from her master's household reveals that her decision arises from the conflict between the opposing values of honesty and filial piety. Omine's theft emerges as a consequence of oppressive social conditions and the internalized value of filial piety that constrains her life. Under her master's strict discipline and harsh attitude, Omine has very few options available to her.
In contrast, Ishinosuke, the son of the Yamamura family, cannot be simply viewed as irresponsible or pleasure-seeking. His actions are a response to his stepmother’s attempt to exclude him from the inheritance, and they represent a strategic choice that takes advantage of social changes. Ishinosuke's attitude reflects an effort to capitalize on the changing social norms, which make it difficult to sever parent-child relationships.
In this context, Ishinosuke’s actions during the crisis when Omine’s theft is about to be exposed can be interpreted as an attempt to conceal her crime. The narrator’s question, “The virtue of filial piety, which I did not know, has turned into Ishinosuke’s crime,” complicates the interpretation of his actions as merely an attempt to save Omine. This question suggests that immoral acts, such as theft, can be concealed under the name of filial piety, highlighting the illusory and dual nature of traditional values.
Through 「Otsugomori」 Higuchi Ichiyo portrays filial piety not just as a virtue, but as a structural system that oppresses and controls socially vulnerable individuals, such as lower-class women. This study clearly demonstrates how the value of filial piety has been used to suppress these socially disadvantaged individuals.
