1980년대의 일본 로봇 애니메이션과 사실주의적 시각 표현의 행방 = Japanese Robot Animation and Realistic Visual Expression in the 1980s

本研究は、1980年代中頃以降において、アニメの持つ表現技法である「セル画」がいかに複雑化し、アニメから写実主義的な絵画表現を追い出したかを明らかにするものである。日本のテレビアニメは、その製作に伴う手間を省くために「ハーモニー技法」など、「動き」を押さえながら絵の具のタッチなどで感銘を与える製作技法を、1970年代ごろから発達させてきた。しかし、＜宇宙戦艦ヤマト＞や＜機動戦士ガンダム＞以降、いわゆる「リアルロボットアニメ」のブームとともにアニメの核心的な表現技法である「セル画」が著しく複雑化する現象が現れた。 本研究では、特に1980年代中頃以降のロボットアニメの中のメカニック描写におけるディテールの上昇について、主にアニメ制作者のインタービュや回顧を探りながら、この時期のアニメ製作環境においてセル画表現の精密化や複雑化が進んだ理由を明らかにし、その変化の性格を規定することを目標にする。その結果、1980年初頭を境にアニメ業界に入門した若手アニメーターたちが、写実的な表現を追求する傾向にあった先輩世代のスタッフとは違って、アニメの固有の表現様式であるセル画を以て写実的な表現に準ずる「かっこよさ」を目指し、さらにアニメ関係の出版物の隆盛が彼らの表現欲求を支えていたことが分かった。

This study aims to elucidate how the unique visual expression of animation, known as cel animation, has become more complex since the mid-1980s, rendering the need for realistic depiction unnecessary. Japanese TV animation has developed techniques since the 1970s, such as the harmony technique, which creates through various textures without movement, to reduce production effort. However, following the boom of real robot animations like Space Battleship Yamato and Mobile Suit Gundam, the core expressive element of animation, cel animation, has become noticeably more complex.
This study particularly explores the increase in detail in the depiction of machinery in robot animations of the mid to late 1980s, focusing on the discourse surrounding the animators. It aims to shed light on the background that led to the refinement of cel animation expressions in this period and to define the nature of this refinement. As a result, it was found that, unlike the older generation of animators who had complexes about realistic expression, the younger animators who entered the industry around the 1980s sought to express the unique charm of animation through cel animation, making it comparable to realistic expression. This movement was supported by the flourishing animation-related publishing industry.
