This article aims to examine the political process of Silla in the 4th~5th century by comparing and exploring articles related to Park Je-sang shown in Samguksagi, Nihon Shoki and Samgukyusa.
According to the study, after Yulpo(栗浦) was conquered by Park A-do galmunwang of Silla under the reign of Pasa isageum, ‘Park’ Je-sang had his family name, ‘Park’, by forming brotherly ties with Park A-do galmunwang, which means that he became the 5th descendant of Pasa isageum with the family name, ‘Park’. Based on that background, he took the governor of Sapryang(歃良) including Ulju and Yangsan and that status was passed down from generation to generation. After that, he got the brotherly ties with Nulji maripgan of Kim royal family again through receiving the public post, Nama for his service to rescue king’s brother, because of which there has been a story of ‘Kim’ Je-sang.
In the 4th~5th century, Silla sent Silseong and Bokho(卜好) to Goguryeo and Misaheun(未斯欣) to Japan as hostage. Then, Silla concluded a peace treaty with Goguryeo in 391 and hostage could return back to Silla in 400. The return of Silseong was by the demand of domestic political group, which resulted from the political misstep of Naemurwang causing the invasion of Japan. Sinseong ascended a throne under the protection of domestic political powers including Misapum(未斯品). Then he signed a peace treaty with Japan and sent Misaheun to Japan as hostage. The peace treaty with Japan was a policy decision by Seok Clan to stabilize the trade route for iron with Gaya. However, as the peace treaty broke down, Silseong reinforced pro-Goguryeo policy and sent Bokho to Goguryeo as hostage again. Finally, Nulji took power by political upheaval assassinating Silseong and came to the throne. 2~3 years after accession, he made Bokho and Misaheun return to Silla. While the return of bokho was through official diplomatic process, that of Misaheun was achieved by the sacrifice of Je-sang.
The upheaval of Nuljiwang shows the conflict caused by the principle of succession to the throne under the league of clan. After the succession to the throne, Nuljiwang married his first son, Jabiwang, to a daughter of Silseong who were in conflict with him. This led to the establishment of system of succession to the throne by lineage of Naemulwang, getting away from the succession principles under the League of clan and forming the ground for the system of the royal family Kim clan.
