네트워크형 사회에서 단체형 사회로 ― 3·1운동기 유림의 사회적 존재와 문명의식 = From a Network-based Society to a Group-based Society: Confusianists’ Social Existence and Consciousness of Civilization in 3·1 Movement Period

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 3·1운동기 근대적인 사회가 성립되어가는 상황 속에서 유림이 처한 상황과 위상이 어떠했으며, 그들이 제시한 문명화의 길은 어떤 비전을 갖고 있었는가를, 3·1운동 및 파리장서사건에 대한 유림의 관련을 소재로 해서 살펴본 것이다. 종래 유림이 3·1운동기에 아무런 역할을 하지 못하고 무기력한 모습을 보였다는 통념과는 달리 최근에는 이 시기 유림의 활동에 대해 많은 관심이 주어지고 있다. 특히, 지방 유지라는 사회적 지위를 가지고 있던 유림세력은 서울에서의 독립선언 이후 지방에서 만세시위가 전국적으로 확산되는데 많은 기여를 하였다. 그리고 파리장서운동으로 유림의 민족의식이 대외에 알려지게 되었다. 이 같은 운동의 성과에 전국적인 네트워크를 가지고 존재하던 유림들의 존재형태가 미친 영향이 크다. 이 같은 네트워크형 조직은 우연의 산물이 아니라 유림이 표방한 유교 이념의 본원적 측면, 즉 효제를 근본원리로 한 인간 관계의 동심원적 확산이라는 원리가 반영된 것이다. 하지만, 점차로 법인적 단체에 의해 공적 영역이 주조되어 가던 근대사회에서 이 같은 네트워크적 이념과 조직형태는 변화의 압력을 받고 있었다. 실제로 유림 민족운동 중 다수는 유교 본연의 이념으로부터 일정정도 이탈한 ‘개신유림’에 의해 주도되었다. 유교인들의 법인적 단체도 등장하였다. 그러나 유교 본연의 ‘내수적 처세’를 강조하는 유림도 여전히 존재했고 그것의 사상적 기여도 무시하지 못한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article explores the situation and the status that the Korean Confucianists took and the visions of civilization that they had in the End of Joseon Dynasty to 3·1 Movement period where the modern society is established through the relation to the 3·1 Movement and Paris Long letter Petition Case. Unlike the conventional belief that Confucianists did not play a role in the 3·1 movement, it has been given much attention to their activity recently. Especially, since the declaration of independence in Seoul, the Confucianists who had the social status of local elites made a great contribution to extension of demonstration in the provinces. And as a result of Paris Long letter Petition movement, the Confucianists’ national consciousness became known to the outside world. There is a great impact of the existence of the Confucianists which existed with the nationwide network on the performance of these movements. This network type organization is not a product of chance but reflects the principle aspect of Confucian ideology proclaimed by Confucianists, that is, the principle of concentric extension of human relations based on Filial piety and fraternal submission. However, in the modern society, where the public domain was gradually formed by a corporate group, such network ideology and organizational forms were under the pressure of change. In fact, many of the Confucianists national movements were led by the ‘reformist Confucianists’, which deviated from Confucian inborn ideology. Confucianists corporative groups also appeared. However, there is also Confucists that emphasizes Confucianism’s “inner development” value and its ideological contribution can not be ignored.
