I hope not에 나타난 부정어 not의 본질에 대하여

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores the case of the negator ‘not’ in which it is often called a clausal pro-form, as in I hope not, together with ‘so’ in I hope so. Drawing on standard evidence and novel arguments, it is argued that negator is not a clausal pro-form of that sort, but a remnant of movement and deletion. Thus, the negative form is far more complex than the positive. The paper suggests an elliptical analysis of this particular negation. The negator ‘not’ in I hope not, is the new information, contrary to ‘so’ which is the old information. The focused new information should have local antecedent or else there is no way to recover it in deleted site. Therefore, the embedded clause is not deleted until the negator is moved out of that clause. The notion of Focus Phrase and [E(llipsis)] feature are employed to formalize this idea, and a couple of implications are noted for a theory of negation.
